Clean, pack, sterilise

Instruments are cleaned first, usually in an ultrasonic cleaner, then dried, packed in pouches and sterilised in the autoclave. Pouches keep instruments sterile until use and show by indicator that they have been through a cycle.

Class B and Class S

Class B autoclaves remove air with a vacuum before sterilising, so they can process wrapped, hollow and porous loads. Class S cycles are validated for the load types the manufacturer specifies. Check your practice standard and the instruments you reprocess before choosing a unit.
