Urine or saliva

This is the first decision and it is decided by what you are trying to detect, not by price.

Oral fluid, also called saliva, reflects recent use. It is the usual choice for testing impairment or fitness for work right now, for post-incident testing and for roadside-style testing, because collection is observed, quick and far less awkward to supervise.

Urine looks further back. It is the usual choice for pre-employment screening, for rehabilitation and treatment monitoring, and anywhere the question is recent use over days rather than impairment today. Collection needs a private bathroom and a procedure that addresses sample substitution and dilution.

  Oral fluid Urine
Detects Recent use, broadly hours to about a day Use over recent days, longer for regular cannabis use
Typical use Fitness for work, post-incident, random on-site testing Pre-employment, treatment and rehabilitation monitoring
Collection Observed, no bathroom needed Private facility and a tamper procedure
Australian standard AS 4760 AS/NZS 4308

Detection windows are approximate. They shift with dose, how often the person uses, individual metabolism and the cut-off concentration the device is set to, so treat any published window as a guide rather than a rule.

What the panel number means

A six-panel kit screens for six drug classes, an eleven-panel for eleven. More panels is not automatically better. Buy the panels your policy actually names, because every extra class is a result you then have to be prepared to act on, confirm and defend. Kits here cover the common workplace classes, with synthetic cannabinoid options where that is part of the policy.

These devices screen, they do not confirm

On-site immunoassay devices give a presumptive result. A negative is generally treated as a negative. A non-negative is not a positive: it means the sample should go to an accredited laboratory for confirmatory testing by mass spectrometry before anyone acts on it. Building that step into the policy before the first non-negative result arrives saves a great deal of trouble later.

Australian standards

Workplace drug testing in Australia is generally conducted with reference to AS/NZS 4308 for urine and AS 4760 for oral fluid. These standards cover collection procedure, device performance, cut-off concentrations and the handling of confirmatory testing. If your policy, enterprise agreement or client contract specifies one of them, check the stated compliance of the particular device against that requirement before ordering in volume. We are happy to provide the manufacturer documentation for any kit on this page.

Practical points

Kits have an expiry date and are temperature sensitive, so buying a year of stock to save on unit price often costs more than it saves. Read results within the window printed in the instructions, since a device read too late can develop a line that means nothing. Keep a documented chain of custody from collection to result for anything that could end up in a dispute.

Types we stock

  • Urine drug test cups: integrated collection cup and test panel, in single kits and boxes of 25.
  • Saliva and oral fluid devices: collection and cassette formats for on-site testing.
  • Multi-panel kits: six and higher panel configurations, including synthetic cannabinoid options.
  • Surface testing cassettes: for drug residue on surfaces.

The information above is general guidance on choosing a device. It is not legal advice on workplace drug and alcohol policy, and it does not replace the requirements of your own policy, enterprise agreement or regulator.
