Hydrogels and wound gels add moisture to dry wounds and help soften and lift slough and eschar. BIOFAST supplies Solosite, Flaminal, Prontosan Wound Gel, 3M Solugel, Nu-Gel and Duoderm Hydroactive Gel to clinics, hospitals, aged care facilities and NDIS providers across Australia.

When a gel is used

Hydrogels are mostly water held in a gel. They are used on dry or lightly exuding wounds where the aim is to rehydrate the wound bed and support autolytic debridement. On a wet wound they add moisture the wound does not need, so they are generally not the first choice for moderate or heavy exudate.

Plain, alginate-enhanced and antimicrobial gels

Plain hydrogels such as Solosite donate moisture. Hydrogels with alginate, such as Nu-Gel, absorb a little more fluid. Antimicrobial gels, such as Flaminal and Prontosan Wound Gel, are used where bioburden is a concern.

A gel needs a cover

Hydrogels are primary dressings. They need a secondary dressing over them, usually a film, a foam or a non-adherent pad, to hold the gel in place and stop it drying out.

Product choice should be made by a qualified clinician. This is general information and does not replace clinical assessment or your organisation's wound management protocols.
