Self propelled or transit

Self propelled wheelchairs have large rear wheels with hand rims so the occupant can push themselves. Transit wheelchairs have small rear wheels and are pushed by an attendant, which makes them lighter, narrower and easier to fold into a car boot. The honest test is whether the user has the upper body strength and the arm reach to self propel for the distances they actually travel. A facility moving residents between rooms is usually better served by transit chairs; a user who wants independence outdoors needs self propelled.

Aluminium or steel

Aluminium frames are noticeably lighter, which matters for anyone lifting the chair into a car or pushing it all day, and they do not rust. Steel frames cost less and tolerate hard institutional use, so they suit a facility pool chair that lives indoors and is pushed by staff.

Seat width and weight capacity

Seat width is the single most important measurement and the one most often got wrong. Measure the user across the widest point of the hips or thighs while seated and add roughly 25 to 50mm in total for clothing and clearance. Too narrow causes pressure at the hips; too wide lets the user slump sideways and makes self propelling harder because the hand rims sit further out. Standard and patient mover chairs here are listed at 18 inch seat width with a 110kg capacity, with a 22 inch bariatric chair for larger users. If you are close to a stated capacity, size up rather than down.

Tilt in space

The Invacare Rea Azalea and Azalea Max tilt the whole seat and backrest together while keeping the hip and knee angle fixed. That shifts load off the sitting bones without the user sliding forward, which is the usual reason a chair is specified for someone at risk of pressure injury or who cannot reposition themselves. The Max is the higher capacity version of the same chair.

Getting the fit right

A wheelchair that does not fit causes pressure areas, poor posture and shoulder strain. For anyone who will sit in a chair for most of the day, or who has a pressure injury history, a postural need or a complex seating requirement, an assessment by an occupational therapist or physiotherapist is worth the delay.
