Choosing the right nitrile glove

Thickness. Measured in mils at the fingertip. Standard examination gloves sit around 3 to 4 mil and suit routine clinical contact, personal care and food handling. Heavy-duty gloves at 5 to 8 mil are for cleaning, chemical handling and anywhere tear resistance matters more than feel. Thicker is not automatically better: it costs dexterity, and staff who cannot feel what they are doing will double-glove or skip gloves altogether.

Colour. Blue is the clinical default and makes a glove breach immediately visible against skin. Black is standard in tattoo, automotive, beauty and food service, and is increasingly used in aged care where a less clinical look is preferred. Purple and violet usually mark higher-specification or biodegradable lines. Running two colours across a site is a cheap way to enforce a clean-and-dirty task split that people actually follow.

Sizing. Nitrile has far less give than latex, so a glove that is too small tears at the thumb web and one that is too large snags and slips. Order a size range rather than a single size for any team of more than a few people, and expect to carry XS and XXL for a minority of staff.

Powder-free. Every examination nitrile glove on this page is powder-free, which is the standard in Australian clinical settings.

Nitrile, latex or vinyl

Nitrile is the general-purpose choice. It is the standard substitute where latex allergy is a concern, for the wearer and the patient, and it resists oils, solvents and many chemicals better than latex or vinyl. It also tends to show a puncture rather than seal around it.

Latex still has the best fit and tactile sensitivity, which is why some procedural users prefer it, but the allergy risk rules it out of many sites entirely.

Vinyl is the cheapest and suits short, low-risk, non-hazardous tasks such as food handling or basic cleaning. It is a poorer barrier under stress and is not the right choice for clinical contact.

See our latex gloves, vinyl gloves and biodegradable gloves for the alternatives.

Gloves do not replace hand hygiene

This is the failure that undoes everything else. Hands are decontaminated before putting gloves on and again after taking them off, because gloves develop micro-punctures and hands are contaminated during removal. Gloves are changed between tasks on the same person, not only between people: moving from a contaminated site to a clean one on the same patient needs a fresh pair. Gloves worn for a whole round, or worn while touching door handles, keyboards and phones, spread more than they contain.
