Thickened Fluids and Dysphagia Supplies for Aged Care: What to Check Before You Order

Thickened Fluids and Dysphagia Supplies for Aged Care: What to Check Before You Order

Published by Biofast on 19th Oct 2026

Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) is common in aged care, and thickened fluids are one of the most widely used ways to help residents drink more safely. Getting the supplies right matters, because the wrong thickness can put a resident at risk. This guide explains the main product types and what aged care teams should check before ordering. It is general information, not clinical advice: the type and level of thickened fluid for each resident must be set by a speech pathologist or other qualified clinician and recorded in the care plan.

Who decides the level?

A speech pathologist assesses swallowing and recommends the fluid level. Many Australian facilities use the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) framework, which describes drinks in numbered levels from thin through to extremely thick. Suppliers do not set the level, and staff should never change it without clinical direction.

The main thickened fluid supplies

Product How it is used Things to check
Instant thickener powder Mixed into drinks and some foods to reach the prescribed level Mixing instructions for each level, how it behaves in different drinks, tub or sachet size
Thickening gel Pumped or squeezed into fluids; often easier to dose and less likely to clump Dosing guide, pump or bottle format, taste
Pre-thickened ready-to-drink beverages Supplied already at a set level, with no mixing Level printed on the pack, flavour range, shelf life
Single-serve sachets Convenient for outings, visitors or small orders Cost per serve, ease of opening for staff and residents
Measuring and mixing aids Scoops, jugs, whisks and shakers to prepare drinks consistently Accurate markings, easy to clean

What to check before ordering

  • Consistency. A thickener that gives the same result every time makes safe preparation easier for every shift.
  • Staff training. Make sure everyone who prepares drinks knows how to mix to each level and how to check it.
  • Taste and acceptance. Residents drink more when the product tastes acceptable, which supports hydration.
  • Storage and shelf life. Check storage instructions, how long a mixed drink can be kept and what to do with opened packs.
  • Cost per serve. Compare cost per drink rather than cost per tub, and include any waste.
  • Labelling. Clear labels on jugs and cups help prevent a resident receiving the wrong level.

Signs a resident needs a swallowing review

Coughing or choking when eating or drinking, a wet or gurgly voice after swallowing, repeated chest infections, food pocketing in the mouth, or reduced intake because eating has become difficult should be reported so a clinician can review the resident.

Frequently asked questions

Who decides what level of thickened fluid a resident needs?

A speech pathologist or other qualified clinician assesses the resident and sets the level, which is then recorded in the care plan.

What is the difference between thickener powder and gel?

Powders are mixed in by stirring and are widely used. Gels are dosed by pump or squeeze and are often chosen because they dissolve easily and are simple to measure. Always follow the product's instructions for the prescribed level.

Are ready-to-drink thickened beverages worth it?

They remove the mixing step, which can reduce preparation errors, but usually cost more per serve. Many facilities use them for specific residents or situations.

Can aged care facilities buy thickeners on account?

Yes. BIOFAST offers 30-day trade accounts to aged care facilities, subject to a completed credit application. Email sales@biofast.com.au to start.
