Medical Waste Disposal

Biofast supplies clinical waste bags, cytotoxic waste bags, incineration and autoclave bags, patient clothing bags, bin liners and waste bins to hospitals, clinics, aged care homes, dental and veterinary practices across Australia. Waste segregation in Australian healthcare runs on colour, and ordering the right colour bag in the right size for your bin is what keeps a site compliant and keeps disposal costs down. Order by the carton with wholesale pricing on trade accounts.

The colour code

Australian healthcare waste is separated at the point of generation and the bag colour carries the instruction. Yellow is clinical or infectious waste, marked with the biohazard symbol, and goes for high temperature treatment. Purple is cytotoxic waste, used for anything contaminated with cytotoxic drugs, and is never mixed with general clinical waste. Black or clear bags take general waste that carries no infection risk. Getting this wrong in either direction costs money: general waste in a yellow bag is charged at the clinical rate, and clinical waste in a general bag is a reportable incident.

Clinical waste bags

Yellow clinical waste bags are the highest volume line on most sites. Match the bag to the bin rather than the other way around, and check the gauge as well as the litre rating; an underweight bag that splits inside a bin is a far bigger problem with clinical waste than with general waste.

Cytotoxic waste bags and containers

Purple cytotoxic bags and rigid cytotoxic containers are used wherever cytotoxic medicines are prepared, administered or cleaned up, including the patient waste that follows administration. A 23 litre rigid cytotoxic container is available for sharps and solid waste in this stream.

Incineration and autoclave bags

Incinerate waste bags are used where the waste stream is destined for incineration rather than general clinical treatment. Autoclave bags are used for waste or instruments that are steam sterilised on site, and sterilisation pouches such as Medicom SafeSeal Quattro carry an indicator that changes colour once the cycle has run, so staff can see at a glance that a pack has been processed rather than just loaded.

Patient clothing and soluble laundry bags

Patient clothing bags keep personal belongings separate and identifiable during an admission. Totally soluble laundry bags are used for contaminated linen: the bag is loaded at the bedside, sealed, and put straight into the washing machine, where it dissolves. Nobody has to handle the soiled linen a second time at the laundry end, which is the point.

Bin liners and waste bins

General bin liners are stocked from 36 litre kitchen tidy up to 73, 78, 120 and 240 litre heavy duty liners for wheelie bins, in standard and premium gauges. Pedal bins and ward bins are available to suit.
