Disposable Gloves

Disposable gloves are the single most-used consumable in most clinical and aged care settings, and the choice of material decides whether they protect, irritate or tear. BIOFAST supplies nitrile, latex, vinyl, polychloroprene and biodegradable gloves to hospitals, GP clinics, aged care facilities, NDIS providers, laboratories and food businesses across Australia, dispatched from our Keysborough warehouse in Victoria.

Which glove material should you use?

Material Best for Avoid when Notes
Nitrile General clinical use, personal care, chemical and oil handling Rarely unsuitable The default choice. No latex proteins, good puncture resistance, strong chemical resistance.
Latex Procedures needing maximum tactile sensitivity and fit Any latex allergy risk for wearer or patient Still the most comfortable material, but allergy risk rules it out of many sites entirely.
Vinyl Short, low-risk tasks: food handling, light cleaning, non-clinical contact Infection control, chemical handling, anything prolonged Cheapest per box, loosest fit, least durable. Economy, not protection.
Polychloroprene Sterile surgical use where latex is excluded Routine examination work, where it is overspecified Latex-like fit and stretch without the proteins. Costs more.
Biodegradable nitrile Sites with waste-reduction targets Nothing specific Performs as nitrile; breaks down faster in landfill conditions.

Practical guidance

Powder-free. Every examination glove we supply is powder-free, which is the standard expectation in Australian clinical and aged care settings.

Colour coding. Blue is the clinical default and makes a breach visible against skin. Black suits tattoo, automotive, beauty and food service, and is increasingly chosen in aged care for a less clinical look. Running two colours across a site is a cheap way to enforce a clean-and-dirty task split.

Sizing. Order a size range rather than a single size for any team of more than a few people. Nitrile in particular has little give, so a glove that is too small tears at the thumb web.

Thickness. Examination gloves sit around 3 to 4 mil at the fingertip. Heavy-duty gloves at 6 to 8 mil trade dexterity for tear resistance, which is the right call for cleaning and chemical work and the wrong one for clinical contact.
