Cleaning Products

Commercial and healthcare cleaning supplies for clinics, aged care facilities, offices and commercial kitchens across Australia: colour-coded microfibre cloths, trigger sprayers, brushes and sponges, hand soaps, detergents and hospital grade disinfectants.

Clean first, then disinfect

This is the step most often skipped and it undoes everything after it. Disinfectant applied to a soiled surface is largely wasted: organic matter physically shields organisms and inactivates many active ingredients. Surfaces are cleaned with a detergent to remove soil, then disinfected. A combined detergent and disinfectant wipe can do both in one pass on a lightly soiled surface, but it does not replace cleaning a visibly dirty one first.

Contact time is the other half of the job

Every disinfectant has a stated contact time, and it only works if the surface stays visibly wet for that whole period. Wiping a surface and drying it immediately gives you the appearance of disinfection and very little of the effect. If a product needs several minutes and the surface dries in one, it needs reapplying, or it is the wrong product for that surface.

In Australia, disinfectants making hospital grade claims are regulated by the TGA and must be listed accordingly. Check the label and the product information for the claim and the contact time rather than assuming from the name.

Colour-coded cleaning

Colour coding stops a cloth used on a toilet being used on a bench. It works because it removes the judgement call from the person doing the job at the end of a shift. A common Australian convention is:

Red for toilets and urinals, the highest risk areas.
Yellow for washbasins, bathroom surfaces and other clinical washroom fittings.
Blue for general low-risk areas such as offices, reception and corridors.
Green for kitchens and food preparation areas.

Conventions vary between organisations and some sites swap red and yellow, so follow your own facility policy and make sure it is written down and visible where the cloths are stored. The scheme only works if everyone uses the same one. We stock microfibre cloths in all four colours.

Getting the most out of microfibre

Microfibre works by trapping soil and moisture in the fibre structure rather than pushing it around, which is why it outperforms cotton on both cleaning and on how much chemical you need. Three things ruin it: fabric softener, which coats and blocks the fibres; high heat in the dryer, which melts them; and washing with cotton items, which sheds lint into the structure. Wash separately, no softener, low heat, and a cloth will survive hundreds of cycles.

Dilution

Concentrates are cheaper per use but only if they are dosed correctly. Over-dosing does not clean better: it leaves residue that attracts soil, costs more, and in some cases leaves a film that interferes with the next disinfection step. Use a dosing system or a marked measure rather than a free pour, and label spray bottles with the product and the date they were filled.
