The recurring cost is calibration, not purchase

Almost everything on these pages drifts. An aneroid gauge loses accuracy, a breath alcohol sensor reads high or low, a thermometer wanders, an automatic blood pressure monitor needs periodic verification. None of them announce it. A device that is quietly wrong is worse than one that is obviously broken, because the readings keep being written into records and acted on.

Practice accreditation standards expect a documented schedule for maintaining and calibrating diagnostic equipment, and so do most workplace testing policies. Before buying, check what the manufacturer specifies for the particular model, how it is recalibrated, and what that costs, then put it in the budget alongside the purchase price. For a busy site this is often the larger number over the life of the device.

Consumables decide the real price

The headline price of a device is rarely what it costs to run. Blood pressure monitors need correctly sized cuffs and replacement bladders. Breathalysers need mouthpieces and sampling cups. Otoscopes need disposable specula. ECG units need electrodes and paper. Test kits have expiry dates and need to be bought at a rate that matches use rather than in bulk for the discount.

Work out the cost per use before comparing two devices, and check that the consumables for the model you choose are available in Australia and stocked, not special order.

Clinic equipment and home equipment are not the same thing

Professional units are built for a duty cycle that a consumer device will not survive: repeated measurement all day, every day, with cuffs, cables and fittings to match. In the other direction a professional unit is overspecified and overpriced for a patient taking a reading twice a day at home. If you supply equipment to patients or residents, match the device to how often it will actually be used.
