Drops are absorbency, not size

Every MoliCare pack carries a drop rating. More drops means more absorbency and nothing else. Size is a separate choice, made from the hip or waist measurement printed on the pack. Choosing a larger size to get more absorbency is the most common ordering mistake in this range, and it produces a product that leaks at the legs while still being changed too often.

Work out the two independently: measure for size, then pick the drop rating from how much is actually being passed and how long the product needs to hold between changes. Overnight generally needs a higher drop rating than the same person needs during the day.

Which format

The three Premium formats are chosen by mobility and by who does the changing, not by severity.

Premium Form is a shaped pad held in place by stretch Fixpants. It suits people with reasonable mobility, it is usually the most economical option per change, and it allows the pad to be changed without undressing. It does need the Fixpants, which are washable and reusable and are ordered separately.

Premium Mobile is a pull-up pant, put on and taken off like underwear. It suits people who are mobile and manage their own toileting, and it is the format that best preserves independence and dignity. It is torn at the side seam to remove when soiled.

Premium Elastic is an all-in-one brief with adhesive side tabs. It is applied by a carer, can be fitted and changed with the person lying down, and suits limited mobility, bed-based care and heavy night-time need.

Alongside these, Lady pads are shaped for light to moderate female urinary incontinence, and rectangular pads are used as boosters inside another product.

Boosters go inside, and only one backing sheet

A booster or insert pad is designed to sit inside the main product and pass fluid through to it. Stacking two complete absorbent products instead does not double the capacity: the backing sheet on the inner product is a moisture barrier, so the outer one never gets wet and the whole thing leaks at the sides. If more capacity is needed, move up the drop rating or use a product designed as a booster.

Skin is the real risk

Incontinence-associated dermatitis develops quickly once skin is exposed to urine or faeces under an occlusive product, and broken perineal skin is a short step from a pressure injury. The standard approach is a routine rather than a product: cleanse with a pH-balanced cleanser rather than soap and water, which strips the skin barrier; dry without rubbing; and apply a barrier product before the next pad goes on.

The MoliCare Skin range covers each of those steps, including cleansing foam, wash lotion, impregnated wash gloves and wipes for cleaning, and barrier cream and protective foam for the barrier step, plus body lotion, shampoo and hand cream for general personal care.
